Activities which qualify for Recertification Credit under the Leadership and Professional Membership categories relate to one’s involvement in HR organizations or government commission or boards with an HR mission. See below.
The Leadership Category To be eligible for recertification credit, leadership responsibilities must be external to your workplace and the organization. This can include election as a volunteer leader of an HR organization, appointment to a governmental commission or board whose mission is HR related such as a governor’s committee for the employment of the disabled. Examples:
The Professional Membership Category Recertification credit is available for professionals who maintain national membership in professional societies or associations. Three credit hours per year are granted for national SHRM membership. If you are an SHRM member, you may receive an additional two credit hours per year for a kindred national HR society or association, such as the American Society for Training and Development or the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Guidelines for accumulating the 60 credit hours in all the categories noted may be found at http://www.hrci.org/recertification/calchrs See the grid below to determine PHR/SPHR recertification requirements that apply to you. |

Special Strategic Management Requirements for SPHR-certified Professionals SPHR certified professionals are required to earn 15 of the 60 recertification credit hours over a three-year period specifically in the strategic management functional area. These recertification credit hours can be acquired,
Recertification candidates requesting strategic management credit hours under the categories above must demonstrate in writing why these experiences should be considered strategic under the guidelines established within the HRCI Body of Knowledge. An in-depth discussion on the activities which qualify under the Strategic Management component may be found under “Specified Credit Hours” at http://www.hrci.org/recertification/newphrsphr
For more complete details on the new requirements visit the following website: http://www.hrci.org/recertification/newphrsphr GPHR Requirements GPHR recertification has the same requirements as PHR/SPHR recertification (recertification every three years/60 recertification credit hours) through continuing education, instruction, on-the-job experience, research and publishing, leadership and professional membership in a national or international HR professional association. However, 30 of the 60 recertification credit hours must be in international HR management, as identified in the GPHR body of knowledge. For further information on GPHR recertification and recertification of those with both GPHR and PHR or SPHR designations, visit http://www.hrci.org/recertification/GPHR Application Processing Certified professionals seeking recertification must keep track of their recertification activities along with documentation i.e. proof of attendance in case of audit. All recertification candidates should retain this documentation for six months after becoming recertified. You may submit recertification applications through an online or paper application. Online applications are preferred. Each person holding an HRCI certification has their own online recertification file in which to record their continuing education activities. This online file allows you to record your activities as they are accumulated. See Page 17 of the Recertification Handbook for more details at http://www.hrci.org/Recertification/book. HRCI reviews all recertification applications to ensure that activities are HR-related and tied to the HRCI Body of Knowledge.
